Violin Tuner
Tune your violin with your microphone, or play each string's reference note and tune by ear. Free, no app, nothing to install.
Uses your microphone. Audio stays on your device.
How to use this violin tuner
- Press Start tuner and allow microphone access. Sound never leaves your device.
- Bow or pluck one open string. The big letter shows the note the tuner hears.
- If the needle leans left the string is flat, so tighten it slightly. If it leans right the string is sharp, so loosen it.
- Stop when the needle sits in the middle and the note turns green. That means you are within 5 cents.
Tap any string button (G, D, A or E) to hear its reference pitch. Tapping a string also locks the tuner to that string, which helps when the instrument is far out of tune.
Violin string notes and frequencies
A violin is tuned in perfect fifths. From the thickest string to the thinnest the notes are G, D, A and E.
| String | Note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| G | G3 | 196.00 Hz |
| D | D4 | 293.66 Hz |
| A | A4 | 440.00 Hz |
| E | E5 | 659.26 Hz |
The A string is the reference string. Orchestras tune to it, and most players tune it first. See the violin string notes guide for a memory trick and the notes on each string.
Fine tuners or pegs?
Use the fine tuners on the tailpiece for small changes of a few cents. Use the pegs only when a string is out by a semitone or more, or after fitting a new string. Turn pegs in very small movements and push them gently into the pegbox as you turn so they hold. Our step by step guide covers both: how to tune a violin.
Changing the reference pitch
The tuner uses A4 = 440 Hz by default, the standard for most music today. Some orchestras tune to 441 or 442 Hz and baroque groups often use 415 Hz. Change the A4 box to match your ensemble.
Frequently asked questions
What notes are the violin strings tuned to?
From lowest to highest: G3 (196.00 Hz), D4 (293.66 Hz), A4 (440.00 Hz) and E5 (659.26 Hz).
Can I tune a violin without a tuner?
Yes. Tune the A string to a reference note, then tune each neighbouring string so the two open strings played together form a clean perfect fifth with no wobble (beats).
Why does my tuner jump between notes?
Bow steadily and play one string at a time. Background noise, a buzzing string or bowing two strings together confuses any microphone tuner.
Does this tuner work on a phone?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers. Allow microphone access when asked.
Is my audio recorded?
No. Pitch detection runs inside your browser. No sound is sent or stored anywhere.
